Tuesday May 9th, 2023: We Wayward Divas + Supports

Gilly Darbey and Vikki Clayton

“We take our music very seriously but we love to have fun too”

Both are famed for their beautiful voices, write much of their own material and between them play several instruments. Singing songs of love and life. Not to be taken lightly these girls have impeccable pedigrees when it comes to musical careers. Between them and sometimes together they've worked with Van Morrison, Richard Thompson, John Martyn, Fairport Convention, Joan Armatrading, Ralph Mctell (blah blah - the list is endless ) and they are too modest (old) to remember them all – Needless to say highly respected by their peers.

They've toured the world, played major festivals and events (did ya spot Gilly at Live Aid?) and armed with nothing but their voices, charm and prosecco they thrill audiences everywhere. Both of them born in the UK but now happily living in New Zealand. Here are just some of their favourite reviews

“I want to be like them when I grow up” from an admiring young female musician (anonymous)

“They go on too long, they laugh too loud, they will drink you out of house and home and probably steal your horses. Lock up your sons. BUT they have beautiful voices and you will undoubtedly love them” Tony Fuel (Paekakariki)

“Damn, we were good tonight” Vikki and Gilly

Matt Dower

Upper Hutt lad Matt Dower has played for us last year and at a couple of our Grab-A-Spot open mics. He has delighted us each time.

He describes his music as unsung tales of Aotearoa New Zealand. Country Blues Folk stories for generations to share. A deep and abiding love for the land and its people are Matthew Dower’s songwriting inspirations. His is a rich collection of characters: from superhero seagulls saving the day to bantam weight wrestlers within the fray. Surely there is something to take away for all the family.

We're looking forward to hearing him perform more of his songs at this coming club night.

Black Eyed Susie

COVID prevented us from seeing them last month, but Ramon Oza and Susan Colien Reid, AKA Black Eyed Susie are back and better than ever.

Susan and Ramon have been performing their unique blend of blues Celtic and funk since 2006.

They have spent 15 years weaving their own sound from Ramon’s R&B Funk guitar and Susie’s Classical / Celtic / Rock violin.

Ramon and Susie write songs and have supported many National and International artists. They love to share good music and make it accessible to all. They regularly perform at Paraparaumu Market which is one of their favourite places to play, bringing upbeat and warm sounds to the street.
